reaching towards A03

“Reflect on your journey for A03 by listing out  7 possible items which will ensure an effective student-centred, personalised, higher-order-thinking lesson.Desribe each of those possible item.”

The first thing come in mind when I read those lines in my email was like “OOhh nOO….did I missed or forgot something?”….and that is a BIG YESS..i forgot that Im  running out of time for my Assignment 3….ooH..i really need to speed up since I only have 2 weeks left….anyhow…I just finished doing the first lesson for this assignment and yess it release out a bit of the tense …Hopefully this one will be approved by Ms.Ng.hu3…thanks Ms Ng and Ms Masyitah for helping us a lot…..

Anyway…back to the main purpose~~listing 7 items will ensure an effective student-centred, personalised, higher-order-thinking lesson~~

and these are the 7 items:

1. Designing lesson that can trigger their mind and develop their intellectual dimension.

During the lesson, we will include questions or activities that can trigger their mind and also challenges their creative and critical thinking. By doing this, the students will be able to activate their knowledge in mind and develop it through out the learning and  making them active learners. This will promote a higher order thinking skills as they will use their minds and thoughts to solve the problems given in questions or activities prepares for them.

2. Deliver instruction through multiple forms of media

Most of the lesson designed for this Assignment three are using multiple forms of media. We are using,  computers, LCD projector, cd player and many more in order to ensure the effectiveness of the lesson. This variety usage of media will also attract the students in participating and involving themselves in the lesson. This surely promote the personalized learning since deliver instruction through multiple forms of media is one of the criteria underpin the personalized learning.

3. Give the freedom for the students to work in their own ways.

This way of teaching will give the chances for the students to explore themselves and develop their own skills. We as teachers might not seen their capability until they can proof it to us. So, by letting them using their own way and develop their own skill, they will have the opportunity to show and proof it to the class. Plus, they will have the chances to move on to the next step without waiting for the other students hence will not disturb their learning development. This will ensure the effectiveness of personalized learning since this is also one of the criteria in implementing personalized learning in class.

4. Implementing group work in most of the lesson.

As we all know, group work will always be the effective ways in encouraging students centered and personalized learning. It is because, through group work, the students will be able to not only works by themselves but also has the chances to get along and sociolize with each other. They will feel more confidence when working in a group and they will also has the chances to help others as well as improving themselves with the help of the other group members. This will be easier for teachers to facilitate and monitor the students works and also saving lots of time since he doesnt really need to monitor and handle the students individually at time.

5.Consideration of the students’ prior knowledge

Before designing the activities, we really need to know the students’ basic and prior knowledge. Once we know what their prior knowledge is, it will be easier for us to design the activities for them. Knowing their prior knowledge is really important since it will somehow effect the effectiveness of the lesson. The students will easily understand the current lesson if it related to their prior knowledge. They will be more motivated to learn since they already have some input of the knowledge and they will be curious to know more about it.

6. Teacher and peer assessment and feedback.

As we all know, assessment and feedback are two important elements that should not be neglected during the teaching and learning session. By having assessment and feedbacks from other people, the students will be able to identify and realized their own mistakes as well as improving and correcting their mistakes based on the assessment and feedbacks given to them. Hence for the lesson plans, we make sure that there will be some time for assessment and feedbacks regardless from the teacher or their peers in the end of the lesson. This session will be the time where the students can know whether they had doing well or  not through the lesson. They will be aware of their achievement and this will motivate them to do better next time.  Not only that, teacher will also be able to know the effectiveness of the lesson from this session.

7. ICT usage.

Most of lesson designed for this Assignement 3 are ICT based ! Even for the school that not provided with LCD projector or computer lab, we still use ICT as one of the tools that helping us in designing the lesson. We will at least use ICT to make or design task sheet for the students and we will print and make copies for the students. In addition, lots of  ICT tools that were given to us by the lectures are useful for the teaching and learning session. We had choose and make use some of it for our lesson.   This will really useful for us since it will vary our teaching aids in class.

I think thats all 7 elements that i can share with you guys here. Hopefully it will reach the objective that the lecturer wanted. Feel free to comment and give feedbacks~~adiooSS~~

This one is for E-book~~

Hi everyone…Let me start this entry by giving a definition of the word “e-book” . E-book (short for electronic book,or EBook), also known as a digital book, is an e-text that forms the digital media equivalent of a conventional printed book, sometimes restricted with a digital rights management system. (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EBook,2011)

Okey, now we know what is ebook and for this entry I will share my original ebook (done during last semester)  and also the modification version of it. This modification is based on what me and my friends learn this week which how to make the ebook appealed to the students.

The title of my ebook is “Abu eats too much”. This is a story about a boy who ate lots of food until his stomach went ache. He went to the clinic and the doctor advised him not to eat too much next time . He regretted what he had done and promised not to do that again.

This is the original front page of my ebook..(quite dull isn’t it)..so I reform it to be like this….tadddaaaaa~~~

so..how do you think? errkk…I think its also dull….hu3..nevermind….Anyway..I edited this front page by changing the font. I replace the the word “Abu”  with fruit alphabets in order to relate it with the story which is regarding to food. I also increase the size of the font and picture to make it clearer to the reader. Plus, I change the background colour just to make sure that the colour wont distract my actually focus which is the title of the story.

I also increased the size font for the content and the yellow background colour into white. This is to make sure that the readers can see the sentences clearly and the background colour will not distract my main focus which is the story line.

This is the original slide:

Edited version:

Ohh..one more thing..I also add dialogue box to make it interesting…urrmm..interesting? i guess so..huuu~~

Below is another examples where I increase the size of the images:

Original side:

Edited version:

Furthermore, I also add some constructive question that can trigger the students mind.

Example:

So, thats all about the modification. Hopefully the edited version will not only be attractive but also effective to their language learning.  Doing all the modifications made me realize that there are certain aspects that I need to consider before creating and designing the ebook. This will absolutely effect the readers and the effectiveness of the book.

Thats all for this week…feel free to give comment…..daaa~~~

Personalized Learning Lesson Plan~~

Hi peeps….for this entry, I will share to you guys on one lesson plan that inculcate the Personalized learning. Hey…I want to be the millionare~

hi guys….we meet again…this time I will reflect about my experience in doing the PPT task  (Who wants to be a millionare) with my other group members and also the presentation on this PPT task from the other groups.

From the task that we had been assigned, we realized that there are actually many ways to approach and teach the students in fun ways. It just depend on our creativity and our way in manipulating things. The PPT “Who wants to be a millionaire” is one of the examples. From the very basic software which is the Power Point, we can actually create and invent such a wonderful and fun games like this. We can put pictures, sounds, animations and many more in the games and make it interesting and attractive to the students.

Furthermore, we found out that this activity is really suitable to test the students understanding on the lesson taught as well as the effectiveness of the lesson taught to them. From this, we can actually trace which part the students could not or hard to understand.  This will help the teachers to know which part they should revised  with the students for that lesson.

Plus, this game can also be used to sum up the whole lesson. It is because, teachers are able to use all the main point or the focussed skills taught in this games by including the questions related .  Hence, the students will be able to see the overview of the lesson taught in this game.

Moreover, during watching our friends presenting their ppt slides, we found out that there were actually many ways in enhancing and improving the games and make it fun to the students. Many of us had change the background of the slides and make it suitable with the topic questioned in this game. There were also images, sounds and many more things that were included just to make it more attractive and suit with the targeted students.

So, hows your opinion? Interested with this game? you can use it in your lesson to. Feel free to adapt and improve it based on your students and the topic taught. As for me, I will surely use this game…hopefully you guys enjoy reading this post….thats all for now…daaa~~

Restaurant city~

For this 5th entry , I will share about Restaurant City games that I played through Facebook. As for me, I can somehow use this games to promote the learning of English Language for the students. There are lots of things that can be used  manipulated for the sake of the students in the classroom. Im sure the lesson will be fun and the students will be interested in participating themselves in the lesson.

Now lets look at the lesson plan…

Year: 3

Language proficiency: Average Proficiency

Topic: Prepositions (Eg: behind, besides, in front of, between)

Skills: Listening and writing

Previous knowledge: Nouns(names of things in the restaurant. Eg: chair, table, front door, etc)

Learning objectives: In the end of the lesson, students will be able to :

-Place the things according to the preposition said by the teacher.

-Write the right preposition of the things said by the teacher.

Procedures:

Set induction

1)Teacher projects the game and gaining the students responses by asking them about the position and place of the things in the game.

2) Teacher lists down the students answers and lead them towards the topic which is “Prepositions”

Pre listening

1) Students discusses the prepositions listed with the teacher and the other preposition introduced by the teacher.

2) Teacher asks the students to make some notes about the preposition.

3)Teacher tests their understanding by asking the several questions on the preposition with the use the games projected.

Listening

1) Teacher asks the students to decorate the restaurant by listening to the teacher instruction on where to place the things in the restaurant.  Teacher will use the preposition that they had discussed previously.

-the students will click at the decorate icon before they can start decorating-

-start decorating based on the prepositions said by the teacher-

2) Teacher checks the students work.

Post listening

1) Teacher will project the games on the screen and said one of things in the screen.

2) The students are required to write the right prepositions related to the things said.

Closure

1) Teacher concludes the lesson and reemphasizes the topic taught.

Hopefully this simple lesson plan will be useful to everyone…I think thats all from now…daaa~~~

Peeping the Tux Paint~~

hoyeah…we meet again guys…so hows holiday? hows Chinese New Year? hopefully you guys enjoy this festive holiday. Ohh..before I forgot. hopefully its not too late…I just want to wish all my Chinese friends a  very very Happy Chinese New Year and may your life will  be more prosperous in this Rabbit Year…dun forget to give me angpow okay..ho3…

Anyway…back to the topic upthere..”Peeping the Tuxpaint”..emmm….what is Tux Paint actually?  My first impression of Tuxpaint is one of the software like “Paint” programme…alaa..the one that we have in our computers…we use it to draw something virtually.

haaa…this one…”Paint”..got it? hu3..

However..”Tuxpaint” is not totally like “Paint’. Tuxpaint has more functions and advanced than Paint. Tux Paint is a  drawing program for children ages 3 to 12. It combines an easy-to-use interface, fun sound effects, and an encouraging cartoon mascot who guides children as they use the program. Teacher can use and manipulate this software to teach the students in class.

Now lets talk more about thi Tux Paint…

1. The functions of the tool

  • Teacher can use this software to teach lots of things. For instance,  he/she can use this to teach and introduce various of colours to the students. Teacher can choose any colours provided at the bottom of the screen and show it to the students.

Plus, teacher can test the students by asking them to colour the blank canvas by the colour said by the teacher. From this, teacher can know wheter the students had mastered the name of colours taught to them.

  • Then, teacher can also use this software to teach the students about shapes. It is because, this software provided types of shapes that can be choose by the teacher.

Teacher can also use this to trigger the students creativity by asking them to create objects based on the shapes provided to them. For instance:

  • Furthermore, teacher can also use this to teach the students about “Jawi” or “Chinese” writing. It is because, it has calligraphy button that can be use by the teacher to show and demonstrate on how to write Jawi or Chinese writing using this calligraphy.

  • In addition, teacher can manipulate and use this software to teach numbers and calculation to the students.

The examples obove are just some of the use and function of this software, you can try and explore by yourself in order to get more ideas on how to use this in your classroom…and now lets talk about the limitation of this tool.
2. The limitations of the tool

Eventhough, there are lots of thing that can be done by teachers with this software, there are also some limitations and weaknesses that the teacher need to face when using this software.
  • First and foremost, teacher can not use this software to do animation or movement with the pictures used. So, it will be less attractive to the students.
  • Secondly, teacher will not be able to use sounds in this software since it do not provide any sounds or musics to be included in any of the teacher’s or student’s work. So, it will not favour students with audioand music intelligences who have the tendency and interest of music and sounds when learning something.
  • Thirdly, this software is actually suitable for lower primary students and did not really suitable for the upper primary school students. So, this software can’t be used through out the years and the teacher will need to find another software thats suitable for the upper primary students.

3. When can this tool be used

This tool can be use in any stages of the lesson (from set induction to the closure). It depends on the teacher to use their creativity and manipulate this tool in their class. However, for me, this tool might be more suitable during the production stage whereby the teacher can ask the students to do or create something with this software based on the lesson taught previously. They can use this tool to show their understanding of the input given by the teacher.

4. The user friendliness from the teacher point of view (you)

In my point of view, this tool is easy to handle. That is why, this tool is more suitable to the lower primary students. It has label on each button and the user will be able to know the function of the button by looking at the labels.  The words use for labeling the button is really simple and easy to understand. Those simple words will be very suitable for the primary school students since their vocabulary bank is still in the process of enriching and acquiring words. Plus, this software provide instruction to the users. “Using the program is so effortless and fun maybe because Tux, the little Linux mascot is around guiding you and giving advices at the bottom.– SharedReviews.com, May 23, 2008.”

The picture above shows the instruction provided in the software.

5. The tool is suitable for which standard
This tool will be suitable for the lower primary students which is from the standard 1 until standard 3.It is because the function of this software is quite easy and it will be suitable to be handled by them. It provide basic skills such as colouring, counting simple calculations and numbers which is really needed for these lower primary school students.
Ohh..before i forgot….just want to share some of this Tuxpaint tutorial thatI found in youtube.
So… I think thats all for now..hopefully this entry will provide some information about this software…
bye2..tatatititutu~~~

TPACK ohh TPACK~~

Hi guys…how’s life going on? hopefully everyone is enjoying theirs….by the way….back to the topic…TPACK….emm..what is TPACK? actually this is a brand new term to me….just had no idea at first..but I slowly understand about it after some readings and discussion in class.

Now..what is TPACK? TPACK is “the specialized, highly applied knowledge that supports content-based technology integration is known as“technological pedagogical content knowledge,” abbreviated TPCK or TPACK” (Koehler & Mishra 2008).

For you guys who do not like to read long definition, maybe the diagram below will help you to understand about TPACK.

Now..have you get what is TPACK mean? In simple words, TPACK is the combination of three element which are the Technology, Pedagogical and Content knowledge in a particular learning session.

Emmm..still blur? okay2….lets me explain more by giving you one of the examples of using TPACK in my previous teaching practicum….

Class: 3 Jujur

Them : World of Knowledge

Topic :  Before and Now

Focused Skill: Listening

Integrated Skills : Speaking and Writing

Language Focus: Noun (names of transport)

TPACK elements:

Technology knowledge:

In this lesson I had use a video song related to the language focus entitled “Transportation”

This is really a nice induction song since it had grabbed the students attention and attracted their interest towards the lesson. I had also use this song to teach them several types of transportation that they need to know in this lesson in the pre-listening stage. With the catchy rhymes and melody and also clear dictation from the song, the students were able to catch words in the song easily and prepare themselves for the next stage which was the while listening stage.

Pedagogical knowledge:

For pedagogical knowledge, I had used the one of the elements in *Desuggestopedia method which was music. The video song used in this lesson was catchy enough to attract the students attention through out the lesson. They were able to memorized several lines from the song in the end of the lesson and I considered this as success.

* You guys can click on this link if you want to know more about desugestopedia:

http://www.jwelford.demon.co.uk/brainwaremap/suggest.html

Content Knowledege:

The video song that I used in this lesson contained the content knowledge that I wanted to teach my students which was the the type of transportation.  So, by using the video song, I was able to teach the students and the students were able to learn  about transportation  in a very fun and interesting way.

Eg of transportation stated in the song:

car

truck

train

bus

unicycle

submarine

And thats how I integrated TPACK in my class.  Its was quite an interesting lesson and I’m looking forward to integrate TPACK in my next lesson. However, I also need to make sure that it is suitable  enough for my students since it will  not always be an effective ways used in class.

-Thank you-
